Adhikary beats Kalishekar

MUMBAI Sept. 2 Laxminarayan Adhikary beat fellow Indian P. Kalishekar in the first round match of the World Junior chess for the visually impaired at Potevedra (Spain) on Tuesday, according to information provided by the All-India Chess Federation for the Blind.

The luck of the draw pitted two Indians against each other, resulting in a win for the Bengal player over his Andhra Pradesh rival.

These two, along with coach Joseph D'Souza from Pune, comprise the GTL Limited-sponsored Indian team at this event organised by Kasparov-Marcote International Chess School, under the aegis of International Braille Chess Association.

Five other first round matches were decided, the winner will decide the best visually impaired junior chess player in the world from among 23 players from 10 countries. Top seed is Russia's Nasobin (ELO 2134).

India's participation has been organised by All-India Chess Federation for the Blind, with timely support from GTL Limited, a networking solutions provider associated with visually impaired chess for past five years.

The results (first round): Nasobin (Russia) (1) bt Harkowski (Pol) (0); Havranke (Ger) (0) lost to San Jose (Spain) (1); Komissarov (Rus) bt Horbacaj (Slovenia) (0); Irving (Eng) (0) lost to Stolarcik (Pol) 1; L.Adhikary (Ind) (1) bt P. Kalishekar (Ind) (0), Ledwith (Eng) (0) lost to Brianso (Spn) 1.
