This Day That Age
India was to have its first reactor producing atomic energy by 1956, according to Dr. H. J. Bhabha, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, in an interview he gave in Bombay on the 1st. He said the location of the reactor had not been decided. Adequate funds had been made available by the Government of India to the Atomic Energy Commission for setting up the facility. Answering a question if India would develop an atom bomb, Dr. Bhabha said, "India's atomic energy effort is directed to developing atomic energy for peaceful purposes, and not for military use." A uranium-cum-thorium factory was to be set up at Trombay about ten miles north-west of Bombay, within 15 months. Dr. Bhabha said there would be no danger to public safety in having the factory at Trombay, where two oil refineries were also under construction. Dr. Bhabha disclosed that uranium ore had been discovered in several new localities in Bihar by the Raw Materials Division of the Atomic Energy Commission.
