This Day That Age
Squadron Leader Neville Duke of Britain's Royal Air Force reached an average speed of 722 miles an hour during an attempt to beat the world air speed record. The speed was attained by him in a Hawker Hunter plane he piloted off the English south coast, according to early reports reaching London on the 2nd. The record was subject to confirmation by official procedures. The previous unofficial air-speed record was held by Colonel Barnes of the United States Air Force. Col. Barnes had reached an average speed of 715 m.p.h. flying a Sabre-jet aircraft.
