Pak. prisoners case adjourned to Sept. 18

By Our Legal Correspondent

New Delhi Sept. 2. The Supreme Court today adjourned till September 18 the hearing on petitions by Bisharat Ali Rajput and 11 other Pakistani prisoners alleging that they were languishing in Indian jails even after serving their sentences for offences under the Foreigners Act and the Indian Penal Code.

A Bench, comprising Justice M. B. Shah and Justice A. R. Lakshmanan, adjourned the proceedings on the request of the Attorney-General, Soli J. Sorabjee, who has been asked to assist the court.

Mr. Sorabjee submitted that he was appearing in the matter for the first time and wanted time to ascertain the correct position.

He said that he had not been able to ascertain under what law these prisoners were being detained. Mr. Justice Shah said that there were no orders to justify their detention except some meaningless orders by the Jammu and Kashmir Government. The Bench directed the Centre to provide the exact location of their place of detention to their counsel to enable him to meet them.
