Naidu rule marked by anti-poor policies: CPI

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD Sept. 2. S. Sudhakar Reddy, Secretary of the State Council of the CPI, on Monday said the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu's eight-year rule was marked by anti-poor and anti- labour policies, heavy debt, total neglect of irrigation sector, agriculture crisis and publicity more than action.

In a statement, Mr. Reddy described him as a "dictator in the mask of a democrat,'' pointing to the fact that there was no second in command either in the Government or in the party. Some may treat his eight-year rule as a feat. But more than the number of years and achievement of such feats, it is how the State is ruled and how the people are benefited, that is important. Even otherwise, if he can stake claim for a direct rule for eight years, in five of these, it was "indirect rule by World Bank.'' He said the reforms initiated by Mr. Naidu had only helped the rich to become richer and the poor, poorer. The fact that he had to fall back on "one crore boons'' after all eight year talk of reforms, was but acceptance of their failure. People reeled under severe drought conditions. Farmers and the farm labour were the worst hit. Leaving their place of birth, lakhs of them had to migrate to far off places, in search of livelihood. But there was no help worth the name from the Government. It was no different in industrial sector. There was lot of insecurity among the workers. Yet the State debt stood at about Rs. 60,000 crores. Nobody knows how it was spent and which sections of people benefited.
