Cong. depriving State of its share of Krishna water: TDP

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD Sept. 2. The Telugu Desam Party today alleged that the Congress units in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka had colluded with each other to deprive AP of its share of Krishna water to serve the "political designs" of its leaders here.

This was evident from the assertion of the APCC president, D. Srinivas, that the Congress party would prevail upon Karnataka to release Krishna water if the TDP Government stepped down. He made this statement while launching his party's Jana Jagaran Abhiyan here on Monday.

The TDP's view was strengthened by the Congress leaders' steadfast refusal to Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu's proposal that an all-party delegation meet the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, with a request to use her good offices to prevail upon Karnataka to supply water to AP from the Alamatti dam, the party spokespersons, Ummareddy Venkateswarlu, and N. Siva Prasad, told reporters here today.

Asked why the TDP Government is reluctant to use its political clout with the NDA Government on this score, Dr. Venkateswarlu said it had sent 20 letters to the Centre so far. "We have not spared the NDA Government. We stand by our earlier allegation that the Centre has not done enough in preventing the Central Water Commission (CWC) from giving permission to Karnataka for constructing new projects across the Krishna''.

He disagreed with the suggestion that Andhra Pradesh was not as aggressive as Tamil Nadu, which had obtained some relief from the Apex Court in respect of sharing Cauvery waters. "We also approached the Supreme Court and got an order forcing Karnataka to restrict the height of the Alamatti dam to 519 feet'', he said.

Dubbing the PCC chief's statement as `a betrayal of the interests of the people, particularly farmers,', he said it clearly exposed the fact that the Congress possessed the capacity to persuade Karnataka but would not exercise its powers unless it came to power.
