Over 1,100 U.S. troops injured in Iraq

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

Washington SEPT. 2. The number of American troops wounded in Iraq is twice that of the Persian Gulf War in 1991; and the total has increased by more than 35 per cent in August with an average of 10 soldiers being injured every day in that month, says a report in The Washington Post.

The total number of wounded in action, according to the paper, is 1,124 since military operations began this March. This is in sharp contrast to the 467 listed as wounded in action during the 1991 war.

What is especially striking is that 740 soldiers have been listed as wounded since May 1, the day the President, George W. Bush, announced that major combat operations in Iraq were over. Prior to that day, 685 soldiers were in the wounded category. What has been repeatedly pointed out in the media and in political circles is that more number of American soldiers have died since May 1 than in the March-April period.

The total number of dead troops thus far is 282, and 144 have died since Mr. Bush made his announcement of the end of major combat.

The report makes note of the critical fact that the United States Central Command's news releases list injuries only when there are attacks that kill one or more troops. "The result is that many injuries go unreported", the paper said.
