Lorry hits roadside hut, five killed

By Our Staff Reporter

ELURU SEPT. 2. Five members of a family, including two children, were killed on the Eluru-Rajahmundry State highway at Dubacharla, 40 km from here, in the early hours of Tuesday when an oil tanker coming from Kakinada crashed into their roadside hut.

The dead were identified as Kandula Venkanna (46), his wife Nagamma (40), daughter, Venkateswaramma (20), grandson, Prasad (5), and granddaughter Jyoti (1). Tragedy struck the poor family of farm workers when they were in sleep.

Venkanna's son, Rambabu, is the lone survivor in the family. He had gone for a movie and did not return home the previous night.

Heart-rending scenes were witnessed at the accident site. Villagers volunteered to extricate the bodies trapped in the ill-fated vehicle. According to the police, negligence on the part of the driver, M. Chandraiah Goud, is said to be the reason for the accident. The SP, K. Rajaratnam Naidu, and the Eluru Revenue Divisional Officer, K. Penchal Reddy, visited the accident site and extended financial aid to the relatives of the deceased towards expenses for funeral.
