Cricket
Batting first, Chemplast posted a challenging score of 235 for six, thanks to a second wicket partnership of 152 between Somasunder and D. Vasu (43). In reply, Railways at one stage looked on course with Bhavin Thakkar (47) and Raja Ali (54) batting with freedom. But, telling blows from medium-pacer Prashant Chandran dashed Railways hopes of pulling off an upset on a bouncy track. In another match at the NFC Grounds, centuries by Abbas Ali (104, 14x4, 1x6) and Nikhil Patwardhan (112, 10x4) went in vain as Associate Banks pulled off a thrilling one-wicket win, thanks to a flamboyant century by B. Akhil (110, 13x4, 1x6) and a breezy knock by local star Pawan Kumar (29 not out) in the slog overs. For the host, it was a disappointing day as both Hyderabad Cricket Association XI and the HCA President's XI suffered defeats. A lowly-rated Bihar shocked Hyderabad at the Gymkhana by 18 runs with Sanjeev Gupta (four for 34) being the main wicket-taker while India Cements recorded a more emphatic 145-run win with southpaw S. Sharath (91, 4x4) being the top-scorer and Ishan Malhotra (four for 29) claiming the bowling honours. The scores: At Gymkhana: Bihar 181 for seven in 50 overs (Nikhilesh Ranjan 39, M.S. Dhoni 48, Venkatapathi Raju three for 24) bt Hyderabad XI 163 (G. Arvind Kumar 39, R.A. Viswanath 37, Sumit Panda four for 25, Sanjeev Gupta four for 34). At Shivrampally Ground: Vidarbha CA 217 for eight (P. Vivek 63, Alind Naidu 57, Santosh Vadeyaraj three for 48) bt KSCA 71 (Sandeep Singh three for 19). At RRC: Chemplast 235 for six (Sujith Somasunder 120, D. Vasu 43, Ajay Kuduva 30 not out) bt Railways 218 (Bhavin Thakkar 47, Raja Ali 54, Ganapathy three for 35, Prashant Chandran three for 38). At ECIL: India Cements 267 for seven (S. Suresh 32, Sunil Viswanathan 66, S. Sharath 91) bt HCA President's XI 122 (Ishan Malhotra four for 29). At NFC: Madhya Pradesh 278 for eight (Abbas Ali 104, Nikhil Patwardhan 112, Rakesh Dhruv five for 51) lost to Associate Banks 281 for nine (Saurab 30, B. Akhil 110, Pankaj Dharmani 31). At HMWSSB: Cricket Association of Bengal 232 for eight (Amitava Chakravarthy 94, Sanjib Sanyal 47, Gautam Dutta three for 33) bt Assam CA 223 (B. Nishanta 84, R.K. Mrityunjay 30, L.R. Shukla three for 32).
