Muslims observe bandh in Ahmedabad

By Our Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD Sept. 2. Muslims in the old Ahmedabad area observed a bandh today in protest against the application of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) against five persons, including two clerics, arrested in connection with the attack on the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar last year.

While public transport was normal, most of the shops were closed. However, the situation was peaceful.

A report from Srinagar, which said that Chand Khan had owned responsibility for the Akshardham attack, convinced the minorities that the arrested persons were innocents.

Meanwhile, the ruling BJP has criticised the Congress-controlled Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation for handing over the Lokhandwala Hospital in Dariapur to the Human Welfare Society.

The Congress, however, said that the health committee, the standing committee and the general board where the BJP has proportionate representation had decided to hand over the hospital to the trust unanimously.
