113 insurance complaints filed

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Sept. 2. Lack of awareness of the institution of ombudsman in the insurance sector is one of the reasons for the number of complaints being very few in the State, according to G.R. Reddy, Insurance Ombudsman, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Yanam regions. He told presspersons here on Tuesday that this year from April till date the number of cases filed before him was 76 under life and 37 under non-life claims. People were not aware that there was this redressal mechanism for problems in the insurance sector. Mr. Reddy, who is based in Hyderabad, has been in Bangalore for the last two days looking at various complaints. He said there were two ways of resolving complaints — one through mutual agreement between the insurance company and the policyholder and another through an award the ombudsman would pass. The award would be made within three months of filing a complaint.
