Gowda to go on fast tomorrow

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Sept. 2. The former Prime Minister and Janata Dal(S) leader, H.D. Deve Gowda, has decided to take on the Congress Government on the issue of farmers committing suicide in the State. He will observe a fast in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi here on Thursday to express his solidarity with the farmers and in protest against the Government's "anti-farmer policies." Along with him, the State Janata Dal(S) President, Siddaramaiah, and the MLA, P.G.R. Sindhia, a large number of farmers and party workers are expected to take part. A press release from the party's youth wing President, K.N. Chakrapani, said the Chief Minister, who was a champion of the "hi-tech'' industries, was ignoring the problems faced by agriculturists. Even as Mr. Gowda announced his decision, two cases of farmers committing suicide in his native Hassan district were reported on Tuesday taking the total to 257 in the last two years. Mr. Deve Gowda will be the second political leader to observe a fast on the issue. The BJP leader and MLC, B.S. Yediyurappa, had led a relay fast by his supporters at Shikaripur in Shimoga district.
