Kerala
A meeting of the Cabinet today decided to realise Rs. 42.09 crores from the Kerala Government as price of the total area of 3,060 hectares of the farm. Under the condition of transfer, the Kerala Government would utilise half of the land for resettlement of tribals and operate the remaining area as a farm. The farm, set up in 1971, has a total of 763 employees, including 638 workers, at present. An official spokesman told mediapersons that the proposal had socio-economic benefits. The State Government had been requesting for transfer of the farm to rehabilitate tribals on a portion of the land while retaining the remaining as a farm. He said the proceeds realised through disposal of the farm would help the State Farm Corporation of India to tide over its financial problems. The Centre's decision would give a boost to the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, who had been exerting pressure on the Centre to give the Aralam farm to the State Government to fulfil its promise of land to all landless tribals before the expiry of his current term.
