Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Staff Reporter
In his petition, V. Elangovan, said immersing huge idols made of plaster-of-Paris, plastic paints, varnish, distempers and other chemicals would kill micro-organisms in the water sources, besides polluting the waterbody irreparably. Referring to the demolition of many old buildings, including the Seerani Arangam and Buhari Hotel, in order to beautify the Marina, the advocate said dumping a large number of such idols using giant cranes would spoil the beachfront. He warned of `ecological disaster' if such a practice continued this year as well, and charged the authorities of the Pollution Control Board of having failed to discharge their duties despite authority vested with them.
