dated September 5, 1953: Future Vision

The annual Conference of the British Association for the Advancement of Science began in Liverpool, England, on the 3rd. The keynote address at the opening session was given by industrialist Lord Dudley Gordon, who outlined the prospects for engineering in the developing future. Lord Gordon made observations envisaging, inter alia, the following:

(1) The sun, the tides, the power of gravity, and hydrogen in the air and sea, all being harnessed as power sources to replace coal and oil which are running out, and water the supply of which is limited.

(2) Heat being gathered from volcanic bore holes, taking steps to tackle the danger of release of forces in the process, which could cause some terrible catastrophe.

(3) Agricultural production being increased by better methods of irrigation, which might include using condensed sea water to irrigate vast new areas such as the Sahara desert.
