Railways to adopt new warning system

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI SEPT. 4. The Railways is planning to adopt a new auxiliary warning system (AWS), which has a design similar to the one on the Mumbai suburban section and is compatible with Euro-balise (ground equipment), to strengthen the safety and security of passengers and rail installations.

This follows the recommendations of the Justice Khanna Railway Safety Review Committee. The panel had suggested use of the Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS), a variant of the AWS.

The AWS is working satisfactorily on the Mumbai suburban sections of the Central and the Western Railways on 538 track kilometres since 1987.

The AWS is a radio-based automatic train control system that ensures safe services. Provision of the latest training facilities, weaponry, wireless communication and vehicles form part of this new initiative to further equip the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF).

As per the scheme, outside interference with rail installations, such as track and signalling equipment, will be curtailed.

The RPF and RPSF personnel will also help guard bridges, microwave towers, route relay cabins and tracks of identified vulnerable sections.
