`Telangana Independence Day' to be celebrated in big way

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD Sept. 4. With the State Government not conceding its demand for organising official celebrations of the `Telangana Independence Day' on September 17, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti has decided to organise the celebrations in all the districts right from the village level to mark the "historic event.''

Accordingly, the party will felicitate freedom fighters and eminent persons in various fields on September 17, while the TRS women's wing would visit hospitals, prisons, hostels for deaf & dumb, old age homes and distribute fruits to the inmates. The TRS youth wing, on its part, will conduct a blood donation camp at the blood bank here while a massive rally from Babu Jagjivan Ram statue to Osmania University campus involving students from all parts of the region would be organised on the same day. The procession will culminate in a public meeting at the Arts College grounds on the OU campus.

Disclosing this to reporters on Thursday, the TRS president, K Chandrasekhar Rao, criticised the Chief Minister, N Chandrababu Naidu, for adopting an anti-Telangana stand by not conceding the TRS demand for official celebrations of Telangana independence despite an open letter written to him. "The Chief Minister is insulting the self-respect of the Telangana people by taking an anti-Telangana stand,'' he said.

To illustrate his claim, he said that the Government, which denied water to Nalgonda district farmers was releasing water to the Krishna delta to serve the interests of Andhra farmers. It is unfortunate that the Congress too supported the Government in this matter. "This only exposes the true colours of the two parties and the people should understand this,'' he said.

Mr Rao also expressed concern over the construction of toilets at the Gun Park in front of the State Assembly, which houses the Telangana martyrs memorial. The Chief Minister should personally intervene and ensure that the work is stopped or else the TRS would take up an agitation and the Government would have to take the responsibility for the consequences.
