Gopi Chand bows out

New Delhi Sept. 4. P. Gopi Chand continued with his indifferent form as he crashed out in the first round of the Malaysian Open badminton tournament in Lota Kinabalu, Malaysia, on Wednesday.

However, National champion Abhinn Shyam Gupta and Chetan Anand advanced to the second round, while J.B.S. Vidyadhar and Piyush Aggarwal also made their exit from the tournament, according to information received here on Thursday.

Gopi Chand, who has not been able to emulate his performance in any major tournament since the All England triumph due to injury and subsequent poor form, began on a positive note against his first-round rival Ng Wei of Hong Kong when he comfortably won the first set.

Wei, however, thumped the Indian ace in the next game to level the match. The third set was a tough one. However much Gopi Chand tried, he could not tie down his opponent and eventually lost 15-9, 3-15, 13-15.

While National champion Gupta came back from a one-set deficit to beat Malaysia's Saman Ismail 9-15, 15-8, 15-9, Anand easily outclassed Poland's Przemyslaw Wacha 15-4, 15-3 to move into the second round.

In the other matches of the day, Vidyadhar lost to Germany's Bjoem Joppien 10-15, 8-15 and Aggarwal fell 3-15, 2-15 to Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia. — UNI
