Haren Pandya's father complains of threats

AHMEDABAD Sept. 6. The father of the slain former Gujarat Home Minister, Haren Pandya, Vithalbhai Pandya, has said that he had received "threatening calls" since accepting the Congress' invitation to hoist the national flag at a parallel Independence Day celebrations at Patan.

The 76-year-old Mr. Pandya said he had received three anonymous telephone calls threatening him of dire consequences if he did not disassociate himself from the Congress and continued to pursue the demand for trial of the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi in connection with the killing of Haren Pandya.

He said some anonymous calls also came during his absence. The callers had spoken in Gujarati and Hindi. He had brought this to the notice of the Union Minister of State for Home, Harin Pathak, who assigned two security guards for protecting him and his son's family.

Mr. Pandya came to the golden jubilee celebrations of the Federation of PTI Employees Unions to hand over a memorandum to the Deputy Prime Minister, L. K. Advani, who was to inaugurate the programme. But, as he did not come, Mr. Pandya handed it over to the Union Communication Minister, Arun Shourie, to pass it on to Mr. Advani.

Reiterating his charges against Mr. Modi, he has in his letter demanded the removal of Mr. Modi from chief ministership to ensure an "impartial investigation" into Haren Pandya's murder.
