Joint military exercises with U.S. opposed

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI SEPT. 6. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) today strongly opposed the strategic military cooperation with the United States and demanded that the Vajpayee Government reverse this approach.

In a statement issued here, the CPI (M) politburo said the ongoing military collaboration between the Indian and U.S. armed forces had reached a new stage with the joint exercises being conducted by the U.S. special forces in Ladakh. It described the move as ``harmful to India's sovereignty''.

"The Vajpayee Government is going ahead with the U.S. proposal to integrate the Indian armed forces with the U.S. strategic plans", the statement said adding that the U.S. armed forces were being given access to all vital sectors within India as per the plan.

It said the exercises on the India-China border came after a similar exercise at the Mizoram jungle training school in the North-East.
