Left questions BJP credentials

HYDERABAD Sept.6. Six left parties, including the CPI and CPI(M), have taken exception to the BJP's plan to organise celebrations marking the liberation of the erstwhile Hyderabad State and "appropriate credit'' even though that party had not participated in the armed struggle against the autocratic Nizam regime.

Addressing a press conference on behalf of the six parties, the CPI State Council Secretary, S. Sudhakar Reddy, and CPI(M) State committee member, Madhu, found it "strange'' that the BJP should invite the deputy Prime Minister, L. K. Advani, to a function for celebrating the event at Parkal, while the NDA Government had rejected pension for freedom fighters who had participated in the armed struggle.

They said the Communists were in the forefront of the armed struggle and as many as 4,000 of them had laid down their lives for the cause. The Arya Samajis and Hyderabad State Congress too had participated in the struggle. They said that the six parties -- CPI, CPI(M), CPI (ML), CPI (ML-Liberation), MCPI and ML Committee -- had given a call to people to observe September 11-17 as ` Hyderabad Liberation Struggle' week.

The two Communist leaders accused the BJP president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, of making a false claim that the left parties were responsible for the abolition of oil pool during the United Front Government and said that it was the NDA Cabinet which gave the nod for it. They demanded an apology from Mr. Naidu for trying to defame the late CPI leader, Indrajit Gupta, in this context.
