Boxing

Big time boxing comes to Bangalore after nearly seven years. The last Nationals held here was in 1996 when Madras Engineering Group & Centre staged the event. The Karnataka Amateur Boxing Association has now undertaken to conduct the Nationals, which is likely entail an expenditure of around Rs 10 lakhs. Nearly 300 boxers will be fighting in 11 weight categories. Apart from the host State, there will be 25 States and Sports Control Boards deputing teams for the event. Boxers like Robin Dev (Steel Plant), Khem Anand and Dalbir Singh (CISF) along with Mohammed Ali Qamar, Jitendra and Divakar Prasad (Railways) and Ramanand (Services) will be the main attractions. This tournament will also serve as the selection trial for the Indian team for the International invitational meet at Panaji, Goa from September 30 to October 4. Invitations had been sent to 15 countries and seven have already confirmed participation.
The All India Amateur Boxing Federation will also have its annual general body and executive committee meeting on September 13. Darshan Selvan (Capt.), Oken Singh, N.
