The Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna's brother, S.M. Shankar, gave away the awards. While Prof. Nisar Ahmed was conferred with the "Sugama Sangeetaratna" award, Mr. Srinath and Mr. Manohar were honoured with the "Kalaratna" and "Sangeetaratna" awards respectively. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shankar apologised for his brother's absence, and said he was representing Mr. Krishna. (The Chief Minister, who was supposed to attend the award presentation ceremony did not turn up at the last minute.) "We all know that we cannot believe politicians as they are always pre-occupied. They promise to do everything for people during election time. But, when they realise they are not able to fulfil the promises they look for alternatives. So, I am here on behalf of my brother," he said. Earlier, a poets' meet was organised in which Kannada poets, including the former Kannada and Culture Minister, B.T. Lalitha Naik, participated. A cultural programme was presented by the academy students. The Kolada Math seer, Shantaveera Swamy, the noted poet, H.S. Venkateshmurthy, and others were present.
