Five persons have been arrested on charges of murder. According to the police, Asokan reportedly enticed the girl when she was playing on a street at Vazhur last evening with the promise of getting her sugarcane. He took her to a sugarcane field behind the colony and raped her, the police said. On coming to know of the incident, the relatives of the girl searched for Asokan. Not finding him, they set his abandoned moped on fire. At this, Asokan, who was hiding some distance away, came out in the open and confronted the villagers. However, a large group gathered and beat him up. The mob tied him to a tree in front of the Selva Vinayakar temple here, poured kerosene and burnt him. The Tiruvannamalai SP, Pari, visited the spot today and made enquiries. The police have arrested R.Singaram (33) and R. Munusamy (40), I. Vadivel (27) and I. Sakthivel (20) and R. Panchan alias Viswanathan (30). All of them were remanded to custody by the Vandavasi judicial magistrate. Gopal, inspector-in-charge, Keezhkodungalur police station, who is investigating the case, said Asokan was an ex-convict, who underwent rigorous imprisonment for three-and-a-half years in connection with the rape of a 55-year-old woman in 1997. His wife, Devaki (23), and daughter, Lavanya (6) committed suicide in February 2001, unable to bear harassment by him. Asokan was arrested for inducing them to commit suicide and was enlarged on bail.
