BSNL employees serve strike notice

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI SEPT. 8. Left unions in the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) have served an indefinite strike notice on their management after it offered sharply reduced bonus for 2002-03. The strike threat was in response to limiting bonus to Rs. 33 crores against Rs. 270 crores last year due to falling profits.

"No financial papers indicating the reasons for the decline in profits were supplied at the meeting to evolve a formula of payment of bonus. Bonus for employees is being curbed while high ranking officials enjoy the best comforts without accepting responsibility," said O.P. Gupta, secretary-general of the National Federation of Telecom Employees of BSNL (NFTE-BSNL).

The notice has also been signed by the BSNL Employees Union's P. Abhimanyu and the Telecom Employees Progressive Union's S.P. Srivastava. The NFTE-BSNL has over two lakh members, representing 70 per cent staff
