An addiction

Sir, — I belong to the second generation of The Hindu's readers. The 125th anniversary is indeed a moment of great joy and pride for all your readers. Its fair reporting and fearless editorials have educated so many of us. For my part it has become an addiction like my morning cup of coffee. Unlike other addictions, it stimulates the mind rather than intoxicate it.

As a lawyer I always felt reading my case papers was never complete without reading your editorials and educative articles on subjects like law and democracy. In the national struggle, your newspaper played a historic role. In the field of journalism, you are playing a heroic role. I am sure your newspaper will continue to contribute towards a secular and democratic way of life in our great country. I wish your newspaper all the best in the years to come.

N.G.R. Prasad,

Sir, — Readers are right in paying encomiums on the 125th anniversary of the paper that I have been reading for over 50 years.

Once when I was on tour continuously for over a month, I told my niece to preserve the issues and read them much to the amusement of everyone.

In my younger days, people asked me to read it for improving my English. Raghunatha Iyer's editorials with Latin expressions were a rage. Unfortunately now one finds even common mistakes appearing.

Sir, — The Aug. 27 Editorial encapsules the values The Hindu has championed. Your enunciation of the five cardinal principles guiding journalistic practice is worthy of emulation by contemporaries, who cherish a free and fair press.

Sir, — To read the paper is not only to keep abreast of the current affairs and the authenticity of news but also to gain a command of English.

Sir, — After reading letters by people who have been subscribing to the paper for 30 to 40 years, I feel a bit ashamed to write about my views on the paper which I started buying only a month ago. However, I must say that it is a great pleasure to start the day with a copy of The Hindu.

R. Alhena,

New Delhi
