Iraq admitted to Arab League

CAIRO Sept. 9. Iraq's U.S.-appointed interim leadership vowed here today to end decades of war and turn a new page with its neighbours after a wary Arab League admitted it to its fold on a temporary basis. However, while Libya boycotted the meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers to protest against Iraq's inclusion, other states asked the interim leadership to set a timetable to end the U.S.-led occupation and hold elections. ``Iraq will adopt a new foreign policy,'' the interim Foreign Minister, Hoshyar Zebari, told his Arab counterparts at the opening of the meeting in Cairo.

``Iraq wants to establish better relations with Arab and neighbouring countries and avoid wars,'' he said.

Under Saddam Hussein, Iraq drove a wedge through the Arab League when it invaded Kuwait in 1990, triggering a U.S.-led war to end its occupation.
