Gujarat steps up security for politicians

By Our Special Correspondent

GANDHINAGAR Sept. 9. Some youth are being trained in terrorist activities to create lawlessness in Gujarat, the Minister of State for Home, Amit Shah, told the Assembly today.

He declined to give further details but refuted the Congress' allegation that innocent people of a particular community were being deliberately picked up by the police and harassed. "In some complicated cases, a few people might be required to be picked up for close interrogation," Mr. Shah said.

The reference was to the controversy over the arrest of five persons from Ahmedabad in connection with the terrorist attack on the Akshardham temple last year. (The Jammu and Kashmir police have claimed Chand Khan, who is in their custody, to be the only surviving link of the Akshardham attack and that there was no person from Gujarat involved in planning and execution.)
