Rupee hits new 3-year peak

MUMBAI SEPT. 9. The rupee hit a new three-year peak against the U.S. currency today, driven-up by sustained strong trade and capital inflows, but ended off intraday high due to dollar demand from State-run banks, possibly on behalf of the central bank to contain its rise.

In moderately active two-way trading at the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee closed at 45.80/81 a dollar, a further three paise gain from Monday's finish of 45.83/84 after touching the intraday high of 45.78/79 in late afternoon deals. It opened on a positive note at 45.8250/8350, following an overnight four paise gain.

The Reserve Bank of India fixed the reference rate for the U.S. currency at Rs. 45.81. — PTI
