Prime Minister to inaugurate celebrations

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will inaugurate the 125th Anniversary Celebrations of The Hindu in Chennai on Saturday, September 13, 2003. The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Mr. P.S. Ramamohan Rao, will preside over the inaugural function. Dr. C. Rangarajan, Chairman of the Twelfth Finance Commission, will deliver a Special Address.

The inaugural function will be held between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the University of Madras Centenary Auditorium, the same venue of the newspaper's Centenary Celebrations inaugurated on September 5, 1978 by President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy.

A 20 page Special Supplement to mark the inauguration of the 125th Anniversary Celebrations will go out with the newspaper to all its readers on September 13. The Special Supplement offers an eagle's eye historical account of "The Hindu Experience" by Mr. S. Muthiah, historian of Madras and author of several books, in addition to articles on various facets of the newspaper's editorial development and performance, and also business and technological development, over the 125 years and on what The Hindu means to its readers. There will also be a short audio-visual presentation of The Hindu story, set against the backdrop of larger national and international events, at the inaugural function.

Started by six young Indians as a voice of Indian nationalism on September 20, 1878, with 80 copies, The Hindu today has grown into a major newspaper with a circulation of 9,33,000 copies. It is being printed at eleven centres, including its home base Chennai, and has an employee strength of 3,200.

Plans are being formulated for having these celebrations in some other centres over the next twelve months. The publication of thematic compilations from the treasure trove of The Hindu's archives is also contemplated.

On the eve of the inauguration of its 125th Anniversary Celebrations, The Hindu re-dedicates itself to the following set of core principles of journalism that it proclaimed editorially recently: truth telling, freedom and independence, justice, humaneness, and contributing to the social good.
