Pondy making good progress in industrial sector: CM

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Sept. 9. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, has said the teledensity (phone subscribers for every 100 people) in Pondicherry was 10.43 per cent and this was higher than any other centre in the Tamil Nadu Telecom circle.

This showed that the Union Territory was making good progress in industrial and business sector, Mr. Rangasamy said, commissioning the Rs 2.5 crore digital loop carrier system at Thattanchavady Industrial Estate today. The highest teledensity was indicative of the infrastructure.

The BSNL cell phone service was a distinct facility and he welcomed the introduction of the `online reconnection of phones` (launched at the function), which ensured reconnection within minutes of settlement of bills by subscribers. In the absence of this facility, there were complaints of delay in restoration of connection.

The DMK Rajya Sabha member, C.P. Tirunavukarasu, who inaugurated the Auroville telephone exchange, now housed on its new campus, said in the name of globalisation and privatisation the public sector undertaking services were being virtually crushed.

The Chief General Manager of the Tamil Nadu Telecom Circle, K. Mahadevan, said it was expected that 1.7 lakh more cell phone connections could be provided this year in Tamil Nadu circle. In Pondicherry, there were 28 telephone exchanges. There were 76,688 working connections, while the installed capacity was for 98,500 connections.

The General Manager (Finance) Tamil Nadu Circle, G. Ravi, said Pondicherry was second SSA in the circle in revenue collection. It was the third SSA unit in making profits.

The General Manager of BSNL at Pondichery, S.M. Kalavathy, referred to the highlights of the digital loop carrier system as it would ensure clarity of voice and reduce considerably the fault liability. The subscribers in the Industrial estate, covered under the system, would be connected to main telephone exchange through the optical fibre cable.

The Deputy General Managers, Balasubramanian and K Muralidharan, also spoke.
