During the DMK regime, water was released from Mettur dam on June 12, the traditional date for releasing water for kuruvai cultivation. But now even in September, there is no hope of releasing water.
CPI (M), CPI to join protest
The State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) will participate in the strike on September 11, called by various ryots' associations. The party State secretary, N. Varadarajan, in a statement yesterday, said that farm operations in the delta districts were adversely affected this year due to non-release of water by Karnataka though it had sufficient storage in all its reservoirs.
Karnataka, he alleged, was not ready to accept any meaningful formula for sharing water during distress periods. Similarly, neither the Prime Minister, who is the chairman of the Cauvery River Authority, nor the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, was serious in finding an amicable solution. To protest against the "indifferent" attitude of the Central and the State Governments, the CPI (M) will participate in the strike, the statement said.
The CPI State secretary, R. Nallakannu, too announced his party's participation in the protest.
