`PW lacks good leadership'

SAMSTHAN NARAYANAPUR (NALGONDA DT.) SEPT. 9. The People's War is in deep trouble due to lack of good leadership and cadre, said the commander of the powerful Krishnapatti dalam, Baddam Satyanarayana alias Venkat, who laid down arms last week.

Satyanarayana (21), a school dropout, had joined the PW when he was only 17. He confessed to having committed nine offences including the murder of a constable, Afjal, in Choutuppal, and a TDP leader, Mekala Mallaiah, of Kambalapally.

The significance of Satyanarayana's surrender is that he did so in the presence of his villagers at a public meeting along with the member of the Special Guerrilla Squad, Juttu Yadamma alias Jyothi. "Contrary to others, I informed the leadership before my surrender and left my weapon, a .303 rifle, in the camp,'' he said.

"Attracted by the party's revolutionary songs, I went underground but later realised that the people are not ready to wage a war (against the establishment). At this juncture, the new democratic revolution is unlikely to materialise,'' he told The Hindu. He also said that with the spate of surrenders, the leaders were unable to move freely. "People are getting a temporary benefit out of various Government schemes and they are not ready to fight along with the naxals,'' he said. To another question, he revealed that there was no dearth of money for the movement.

"Money is not a problem. I would have earned crores of rupees, had I intended." Satyanarayana said that the "Palletalli Pilustondi'' programme launched by the SP, V.C.Sajjanar, on Diwali day last year is being discussed by the PW leaders. Asked about the murder of Mallaiah, follower of the local MP, Sukhender Reddy, the former naxal said that the dalam thrashed him because he was a "police informer, corrupt and moreover a politician.''
