Cong. reschedules protest for Sept. 30

By Our Staff Reporter

Bangalore Sept. 9. The Congress has changed the date and mode of its protest against what it calls the failures of the NDA Government.

The party workers will take out processions in district and taluk headquarters instead of organising rail and road roko to avoid inconveniencing the people.

Addressing a meeting of office-bearers of the party and Ministers here on Tuesday, the senior Congress leader, Motilal Vohra, urged them to highlight the "failures" of the Centre during the protest. At the same time, they should take the message of good governance by the party in the State to the people.

Mr. Vohra said instead of road and rail roko on September 22, the party workers should take out processions on September 30. A committee would monitor the implementation of the party's manifesto in the States ruled by the Congress.

Lauding the S.M. Krishna Government for what he called its success in implementing the party's manifesto, Mr. Vohra said it was here that the party workers' grievances were redressed.

The election to the party posts would be held after the election to the assemblies of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhatisgarh, Delhi, and Mizoram. Mr. Vohra exhorted the workers to reach the target of enrolling five crore members, of whom 20 lakh would become active party workers. When the target was met, the Congress would be the biggest party in the country. In Arunachal Pradesh, the Congress could not assume power because of what he called the conspiracy by the BJP and some local leaders of the party.

He said compared to other pradesh Congress committees, the KPCC had done well. He praised the KPCC President, B. Janardhana Poojary, for streamlining the functioning of the unit.

Mr. Poojary criticised the inactive office-bearers of the party. They were loitering in the corridors of power exhibiting their identity cards, he said.

Claiming that people had gathered in large numbers for the party's rallies at Hebbur, Yelandur, and Chamarajanagar attended by the AICC President, Sonia Gandhi, he exuded confidence that the Congress would win all 28 Lok Sabha seats in the State.

He expressed happiness over the interest shown by A. Krishnappa, H.M. Revanna, Ramalinga Reddy, and Roshan Baig, Ministers, and C.M. Lingappa, MLA, in party work. Conventions of 423 of the 448 block Congress committees had been completed, he added.

The senior party leader, Hanumanthappa, the Ministers, Sagir Ahmed and Rani Satish, Mr. Ramalinga Reddy, the party whip in the Council, Salim Ahmed, and the Slum Clearance Board Chairman, Narayanappa, were present.
