Janata Party stages dharna

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE SEPT. 9. Members of the Karnataka Pradesh Janata Party today staged a dharna in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue here in protest against what they called the failure of the State Government to prevent farmers from committing suicide. The members led by Pradeep Kumar Reddy, senior vice-president of the party, condemned the policies of the Government which they claimed were responsible for the increasing number of suicide cases involving farmers. "The Rs. 856-crore package announced by the Government is only to hoodwink farmers. The gazette notification says only Rs. 78 crore will be released as compensation. It is a bogus package,'' they said. The members demanded that online lotteries be banned in the State as they had ruined hundreds of poor families. They sought CBI inquiries into the circumstances that led to the death of H. Nagappa, former Minister, after he was kidnapped by Veerappan, and the stamp paper racket. Action should be taken against those involved in the racket, they said.
