Six in fray for Vemgal bypoll

By Our Correspondent

KOLAR SEPT. 9. The scrutiny of nomination papers for the byelection to the Assembly from Vemgal constituency to be held on September 26, was taken up today by Mallaiah, Assistant Commissioner, who is the Returning Officer. During the scrutiny, the Returning Officer rejected the papers of two candidates from the Janata Dal (S) and the BJP. With this, six persons are in the fray. They are Krishna Byre Gowda, son of the late C. Byre Gowda, who is contesting as the All-India Progressive Janata Dal (AIPJD) candidate, J. Venkatamuniyappa of the Congress, B. Narayanaswamy of the Republican Party of India (RPI), Rangaswamy of Hotte Paksha, M. Venkataswamy (independent), and B. Mangala, sister of Mr. Krishna Byre Gowda, who is contesting as a "dummy" AIPJD candidate. Though the district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wanted to field its candidate, Sriram, the party leaders, including the State unit President, H.N. Ananth Kumar, decided against it as a mark of respect to Byre Gowda. But B.R. Venkatesh Gowda filed his papers on Monday as a BJP candidate much to the embarrassment of the unit.

Our Bijapur Staff Correspondent reports:
