Three kids die in school building crash

By Our Staff Reporter

ONGOLE SEPT. 9. A pall of gloom descended on the Yanadi Colony of Kanigiri in Prakasam district as three children were crushed to death - two of them instantaneously -- and four others injured when a door and a brick wall of a private school building in the colony collapsed on Tuesday morning.

The victims, all belonging to the Yanadi Scheduled Tribes, were playing close by the wall of the old structure which was renovated recently, according to information reaching here.

The school, a branch of Dr. Ambedkar Aided School in the town, was inaugurated by the sarpanch, V.V. Manoher Rao (Chiranjivi), only yesterday. Mr. Jella Venkateswarlu was reportedly running it voluntarily for the convenience of the children of the Yanadi Colony.

The dead were identified as Chellamcharla Narayanamma (6), Rapuri Venkateswarlu (3) and Rapuri Anjee Rao (8) and the injured -- Mallavarapu Sudhakar (7), Rapuri Roja (8), Rapuri Veeraiah (6) and Rapuri Rathamma (4).

While Narayanamma and Venkateshwarlu died on the spot, Anjee Rao succumbed to injuries on the way to Guntur. Sudhakar was admitted to the district headquarter hospital here. The remaining are undergoing treatment at the Area Hospital, Kanigiri.

The parents of the children were wailing inconsolably, while Rapuri Kondaiah family got a rude shock and its agony was indescribable. The Superintendent of Police, Charu Sinha, the Additional SP, J.S.R. Vidyasagar and the Kandukur Revenue Divisional Officer, M. Venkateswarlu rushed to the spot and the hospital and visited the bereaved families.

The Collector, M.T. Krishna Babu, told The Hindu that the RDO would enquire into the conditions leading to the accident. Police registered a case under accidental death.
