Church expresses concern over fall in values

By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA Sept. 9. The supreme head of the Malankara Mar Thoma Church, Philipose Mar Chrisostum Mar Thoma Metropolitan, has called upon the believers to go for a self-introspection of their deeds and words in the backdrop of the erosion of values in every walk of life.

Mar Chrisostum was delivering the presidential address at the Sabha Mandalam of the Church that began at the Alexander Mar Thoma Auditorium of the Church headquarters in Thiruvalla this forenoon.

``We live in a world of chaos and there were incidents that had even questioned the future of the Church,'' Mar Chrisostum said.

``Nobody could check the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the Israelis denying the Palestinians the right to live, the ever-increasing human casualties in Kashmir and the killing of innocent people in Kannur,'' Mar Chrisostum said.

The activities in the Muthanga forests had prompted us to think whether these tribals too were humans.

Society had been denied the basic needs in the name of progress, development and freedom, he said.

Are we welcoming the unholy forces that tried to enter the Church? ``Those who have been shunned by the Church are becoming its leaders. The Church that has been the messengers of peace had been transformed into a den of chaos,'' Mar Chrisostum said.

The duty of a true Christian was to strive for a world of peace and fraternity, imbibing the spirit and message of Crucifixion, Mar Chrisostum said.

The Church secretary, Cherian Thomas, presented the annual report and the trustee, K. Varghese, also spoke.

Over 1,000 members of the 1,367-strong Mar Thoma Church Sabha Mandalam from the world over attended the meet, besides all the eight other Metropolitans of the Church.
