Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram

The 79-year-old writer, whose work titled `Ambada Njane!'' had won the 2000 Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for the best humorous writing, died early this morning. The body was cremated this afternoon. Born in Pathanapuram in Kollam district, Subbaiah Pillai had retired as a Joint Secretary in the Finance Department in 1979. He had later served for four years as editor of `Kunkumom' weekly. He was the author of several books, including novels, travelogues and collection of anecdotes. The Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, the Culture Minister, G. Karthikeyan, and the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, M. M. Hassan, have condoled Subbaiah Pillai's death.
