Fake CBI officers arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI SEPT. 9. Three persons, who allegedly used to cheat businessmen of cash by posing as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers, have been arrested by the North Delhi police. Fake identity cards and Rs. 1 lakh have been recovered from them.

According to the police, many complaints were received from various areas of North Delhi, about persons decamping with cash of businessmen after approaching them as CBI sleuths.

On September 8, the Lahori Gate police got information that three such persons were standing near Novelty cinema in Lahori Gate and were scanning the area for a possible prey. A police team comprising Sub-Inspectors Naresh Kumar and Ritesh Kumar, along with others, conducted a raid and arrested the three suspects. Those arrested were identified as Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Kabali and Mohammad Mazloom. All of them are residents of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh.

This gang had been adopting the particular modus operandi for the past six months. They used to move around guest houses and hotels and "intercept" the prey just outside them. Their usual refrain being: terrorist activities are on the rise and hence "thorough checking" was required. On this pretext they used to open the belongings like bags and suitcases. They used to remove the cash from them after distracting the attention of the owner. Whenever confronted by the businessmen about their identity, they used to flash the fake identity cards.

So far, the police have been able to solve eight such cases reported from Lahori Gate and other nearby stations like Jama Masjid and Nabi Karim. However, there have been many cases which went unreported, the police said.

Interestingly, the North Delhi police had arrested another person, Jafri Ali, also a resident of Bhopal, in February 2002 for allegedly cheating persons by posing as CBI officer.

He used to pose as an inspector of CBI and often accosted the victim to a desolate place in the name of frisking and questioning before decamping with the victim's money. He used to work under Afsar Ali, again a resident of Bhopal. Afsar was arrested by Sadar Bazar police back in 1998 for similar offence. Jafri used to threaten the victim if asked to produce the identity card.

In the present case, the three accused have been booked for cheating and further arrests and recoveries are likely. The police are also trying to ascertain if these gangs were linked.
