Privatisation of Delhi, Mumbai airports cleared

By Vinay Kumar

NEW DELHI SEPT. 11. The Union Cabinet today cleared the privatisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports, paving the way for constructing world class airports in the two metros. Key areas such as the Air Traffic Control and security in the privatised airports would remain with the Government and other affairs would be managed by private partners, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, said. The private partners could be a consortium which could include foreign players. The restructuring of Delhi and Mumbai airports would be taken up by forming a joint venture company between the AAI and the selected private sector partner separately.

The airports would be taken up as separate projects to be implemented simultaneously and private partners would be elected for each airport. Equity holding of the AAI and other public sector entities would together be 26 per cent and the remaining would be contributed by a private partner.
