dated September 13, 1953: Kashmir Will Not Tolerate Foreign Influence

On the 13th, Bakshi Ghulam Mohammed told 4,000 delegates and workers attending a three-day convention of the Kashmir National Conference in Srinagar, "Sheikh Abdullah played directly into the hands of foreigners by entertaining the idea of an independent Kashmir. He was playing a dangerous game, pregnant with disastrous consequences for Kashmir, India, and Pakistan. The people of Kashmir will not allow international intrigues to succeed here. We will defend our freedom at all costs. Surrounded by big Powers like Russia and China, and by Pakistan and India, Kashmir cannot be independent except at the peril of Kashmiris. The State cannot defend itself against foreign aggression as we have no resources. Independent Kashmir is therefore a crack-brained idea which can devastate the people."

Regarding the proposed plebiscite in Kashmir, the State's accession to India, and the delaying tactics of the U.N. Security Council, he said, "We have to give a fair and straight reply to the aggressor in Kashmir. We are for a free and impartial poll in Kashmir and will accept the verdict of the people. But Pakistan must withdraw from the parts of the State forcibly occupied by her troops. We stand by the Instrument of Accession with India and the Delhi Agreement."
