KGMOA blames Plan Campaign for epidemics

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM Sept. 12. The Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) has held the shortcomings of the People's Plan Campaign in the health sector responsible for the outbreak of viral epidemics in the State.

At a press conference here today, the KGMOA district president, O. Vasudevan, and the secretary, C.R. Jayashankar, said that through the Plan Campaign, the health sector had witnessed rampant civil construction activities. But nothing much was done to improve the facilities at hospitals and health centres, they said.

Moreover, preventive measures had not been given any importance, they alleged. They said most of the Government hospitals and primary health centres remained understaffed. They said that there was no proper trauma care unit at the Kollam District Hospital. The patients and their relatives often vent their ire on Government doctors for such lack of facilities, they said.

On the private practice issue, the KGMOA called upon the State Government to either sanction the doctors a decent pay scale or come out with clear directions on the issue. They alleged that often the authorities used this issue to harass doctors.

Meanwhile, the southern region conference of the KGMOA, comprising Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts, would be held at Kottarakara on September 14. The Transport Minister, R. Balakrishna Pillai, would inaugurate the conference. The district panchayat president, Aiysha Potti, would inaugurate a family get-together. A seminar on `The health scenario: challenges and crisis', would also be held on the occasion.
