Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Special Correspondent
According to sources, acceleratory promotion for over 70 police officers, which has been kept pending for the last two years, is likely to be cleared shortly. A division bench of the Supreme Court on Friday suspended the Andhra Pradesh High Court order against the system of acceleratory promotion. Reports reaching the State police headquarters said that the apex court had admitted the Special Leave Petition (SLP) challenging the High Court order. The issue of acceleratory promotion had been hanging fire for a long time after some sub-inspectors of the Warangal Range questioned the very method of selecting officers for acceleratory promotion in the A.P. Administrative Tribunal (APAT). Their contention was that only some officers had the chance to work in extremist-affected areas and that they enjoyed very good prospects of getting an acceleratory promotion, while others working in unaffected areas languished. The APAT upheld their argument and struck down the procedure of acceleratory promotion. Subsequently, the APAT order was upheld by the High Court also. The Stat Government then preferred an SLP challenging the High Court order and on Friday, a division bench consisting of Justice M.B. Shah and Justice A.R. Lakshmanan of the Supreme Court admitted the SLP while suspending the High Court order, reports said. The police top brass is of the view that the grant of acceleratory promotion would further provide a fillip to officers and men who have been drafted for anti-extremist operations. Their contention was that ever since acceleratory promotion was stopped, the morale of the officers and men nosedived.
