APSRTC bags national award for fuel conservation

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH Sept. 12. The APSRTC has bagged the national award for fuel conservation by achieving a national record of 5.24 kmpl on its services during 2002-03, an unprecedented rise in 17 points over 5.07 kmpl the previous year, said the RTC Executive Director (Engineering), M.V. Nagavender Rao, on Friday. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Rao said the RTC ensured saving of Rs. 25 crores by way of fuel conservation, but it was being offset by the recent diesel price hike which entailed an additional annual burden of Rs. 60 crores, but there was no proposal to immediately hike the fares. Such a fuel conservation achievement had no precedent in any of the road transport corporations in the country, he said. The corporation proposed to bear the burden due to HSD price hike by improving internal efficiency, reducing the wage bill by bringing down the staff per bus ratio and surplus mechanical and engineering staff and introducing ticket issuing machines to eliminate conductors on long-distance services having a couple of stops, he said.

Officials of Bombay State Transport Corporation, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation and three other corporations in Karnataka had visited APSRTC, examined the fuel conservation and cost-cutting measures being taken up from the grassroot level and emulating the APSRTC, Mr. Nagavender Rao said. He presented a paper on the aspects at New Delhi in July, he said.

Explaining the measures taken to cut down on costs, he said the corporation was ensuring greater productivity of workers in all its wings and rewarding drivers at the depot, region and State-levels for achieving the best kmpl. The RTC was offering an incentive of Rs.1.50 lakhs to the depots achieving the targeted kmpl, which would be used to give prizes and gifts to the staff contributing to the achievement, he said.

In addition, managerial excellence was being promoted by awarding trophies and cash awards to the depot managers at the regional and State levels on kmpl and the best depot manager and spouse were being sent on holiday to Singapore at the corporation's costs, the ED stated. The RTC depot at Manthani had achieved the targeted kmpl of 5.75, followed by Visakhapatnam Steel City depot, Kovvur, Metpally, Tanuku, Gajwel Pragnapur in that order, he said. The Cuddapah Divisional Manager, G. Nagendra Prasad, also participated.
