SCR initiatives to boost safety

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Sept. 12. The South Central Railway (SCR) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) have taken several initiatives for enhancing security of passengers and ensuring protection of its equipment.

On a familiarisation tour of the RPF's operations on Friday, presspersons were told of the SCR being the first zone to form one Disaster Management Cell (DMC) for each of the six divisions. The cells comprise 15 to 20 trained RPF men equipped with specialised equipment and adept at disaster management.

The Chief Security Commissioner (CSC) of the RPF, B. Kamal Kumar, said the SCR is the first zone in the country to have formed DMCs for all the divisions. It is also the first to adopt a new SLR (Second Class Luggage and Brake Van) model to prevent theft of valuable material. The laminated sheets which hitherto divided the passenger and luggage sections were replaced with iron sheets. The adoption of the new model had already resulted in prevention of thefts, he said, adding that while earlier the SCR used to suffer a loss of at least Rs. 5 lakhs a year on account of the thefts, now the loss has been restricted.
