P. Kodandaramaiah, chairman of Chitradurga Jilla Neeravari Horata Samiti and former MP, told presspersons here on Friday that this was a victory for those fighting to get irrigation facilities in the district. "Recently, a delegation of the samiti had met H.K. Patil, Minister for Water Resources. The delegation was told about this and was shown the Government Order," said Mr. Kodandaramaiah. The Karnataka Neeravari Nigam would implement the project. Once completed, about 23 tmcft. of water would be available to irrigate 2.5 lakh acres of land in Chitradurga and Chikmagalur districts. The Government Order also referred to the availability of water. About 10 tmcft. of water from the Bhadra River would be utilised. There would be 258 channels, including a 4.5-km. tunnel, Mr. Kodandaramaiah said. "This project will not only quench the thirst of Chitradurga, but also irrigate the Kadur and Tarikere taluks of Chikmagalur district. In the first phase, Hosadurga, Hiriyur and some parts of Chitradurga and Challakere taluks will be irrigated and in the second phase rest of the district will get water," he said.
