Shipping service to help traders

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE Sept. 12. The Chairman of the Tuticorin Port Trust, N.K. Raghupathy, said today that the port would start direct container services to the Shanghai Port in China on October 13. Addressing a meeting of the exporters here, he said it had been decided to operate shipping services between the two ports in view of the increased trade relations between two countries in the past few years. The container service between the two ports would help exporters, particularly those sending textiles from Bangalore. It would reduce transit hours and cost, he added. Mr. Raghupathy said container services to Europe had started on July 15. Besides the cost factor, the Tuticorin port had several advantages over the Chennai and Cochin ports. By providing many services, the Tuticorin container terminal would be developed as a major gateway for South India by 2004, he said. The port earned a profit of Rs. 50.56 crore in 2002-03 compared with Rs. 38 crore in 2001-02. It had handled 13.02 million tonnes and 13.29 million tonnes of cargo in 2001-02 and 2002-03, respectively, he added.
