Relief work: Surprise visit by Sonia likely

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE Sept. 12. The President of the All India Congress Committee, Sonia Gandhi, is likely to pay a surprise visit to some areas to evaluate drought relief operations.

The President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, B. Janardhana Poojary, told presspersons here today that Ms. Gandhi may visit the State in three or four days.

He asked ministers, MLAs, and MLCs to make surprise visits to their constituencies to supervise drought relief operations. He said that if a case of suicide by a farmer was reported, the elected representative of the area should rush to the place and take steps for providing relief to the bereaved family.

Mr. Poojary accused the VHP and other organisations of the Sangh Parivar of fomenting communal tension in the State. He said that the violent communal incidents in Dakshina Kannada district, and Sagar in Shimoga district were the result of a provocative speech made by the VHP leader, Ashok Singhal.
