The census, held once in five years, was due last year. The first census in the State was launched in 1897 by the then Maharaja of the erstwhile Mysore princely State. The last census was conducted in 1997, and according to it, there were 3.06 crore head of cattle, and 2.13 crore poultry birds, the Animal Husbandry Minister, M. Mahadev, said here on Thursday. Giving features of the new census, Mr. Mahadev said it would help determine the number of people dependent on animal husbandry, fishery, and related occupations; production and consumption of milk by individual households; extent of land on which fodder was cultivated; and, production of manure. This time, special emphasis was being laid on finding out the number of people from the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other backward classes engaged in animal husbandry, agriculture, and fishery. Mr. Mahadev and the Additional Director of Animal Husbandry, H. Rafeeq Anwar, said that about 12,500 enumerators from the Animal Husbandry, Agriculture, Fisheries, and Horticulture departments; Karnataka Milk Federation; and local bodies would be involved in the census. The census would be Centrally sponsored, and an allocation of Rs. 2 crore had been made. Enumeration of animals in transit, and stray cattle and dogs would be taken up on the last day of the census.
